Take a look at this New York Times review of Lamorisse’s The Red Balloon (1957). The GFF will be screening The Red Balloon,in conjunction with the W&M French & Francophone Film Festival, on Saturday, February 11th at 12pm in the Kimball Theater.
As you already know, this year’s Global Film Festival, “Film & the City” is an exploration of urban filmmaking and the role of the city in international cinema. In particular, the GFF, in conjunction with the W&M French & Francophone Festival, will present several films set in Paris at this year’s festival, including the Oscar-nominated A Cat in Paris, Danièle Thompson’s Avenue Montaigne, and the classic short film The Red Balloon.
Check out this interesting article by Robert Zaretsky for the New York Times, “We’ll Always Have That Other Paris”, about the way films “evoke a nostalgia for a certain idea of Paris”. In the article, Zaretsky talks about the success and appeal of A Cat in Paris, a film that depicts “a Paris that is simultaneously mythic and contemporary”.
